Akers returns to lead Betsy Layne Ladycats basketball

STANVILLE, Ky. (WMDJ) — A familiar face is returning to the sidelines in Floyd County.

Betsy Layne High School has named Cassandra Akers as the new head coach of the Ladycats girls basketball program.

Akers previously led the program from 1998 to 2007, building one of the most successful runs in school history. During her first stint, she guided the Ladycats to a 162-98 record, winning four 58th District titles, three 15th Region All “A” titles and two 15th Region titles.

She also led Betsy Layne to an Elite Eight appearance in the 2003 KHSAA Sweet 16.

Akers’ impact has extended well beyond her time on the bench. She was inducted into the Betsy Layne High School Hall of Fame in 2009, and in 2020, the court at the school’s gymnasium was named “Cassandra Akers Court” in her honor.

Akers replaces Kory Thacker, who led the Ladycats to a 16-14 record and a 58th District championship this past season.

School officials say her return brings experience, tradition and a strong connection to the Betsy Layne community as the program moves forward.

Reds Blank Rangers 2-0 Behind Strong Pitching

ARLINGTON, Tx. (WMDJ) — The Cincinnati Reds picked up another road win Saturday night, shutting out the Texas Rangers 2-0 in game two of a three-game series at Globe Life Field.

The Reds wasted no time getting on the board. In the first inning, Elly De La Cruz drove in Matt McClain with an RBI single. One batter later, rookie Sal Stewart followed with a line drive to right-center, bringing De La Cruz home to make it 2-0. Cincinnati finished with eight hits, with Matt McClain, Sal Stewart, and Spencer Steer each recording two.

That would be all the offense Cincinnati needed.
