MARTIN, Ky. (WMDJ) – Now that the holidays have passed, it’s time to settle in for a long winter of ‘milk-and-bread’ weather forecast and high school basketball.
If you’re as sick of weather maps on social media as I am, I’ll spare you the milk-and-bread talk.
If you haven’t heard, the 58th District is home to a pair of prolific scoring machines on the boy’s side.
In early December, Betsy Layne senior guard Cameron Pente enjoyed a three-game stretch where the basket must’ve been the size of a hula hoop, scoring 30 or more points against Harlan County, Pike County Central and Floyd Central with the Bobcats winning two of the three.
By the time Leslie County came calling on Betsy Layne the following week, a scouting report must’ve been made because Pente only scored 29 against the visiting Eagles.
Betsy Layne (7-5) has shown flashes of brilliance and could be the team to beat in the 58th District race. A looming trip to Lawrence County come February will determine whether the Bobcats can seize a regular season district title.
The Bobcats suffered a tough defeat in the opening round of the 15th Region All “A” Classic at the hands of Shelby Valley 82-72 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, super sophomore Braxton Keathley has scored over 100 points in his last two games this week, helping to lead a resurgent Prestonsburg squad.
The Blackcats (4-5) stumbled out of the gate, dropping their first five games, including an embarrassing loss in the WYMT Classic to Hazard. However, veteran coach Harold Tackett has his team playing its best basketball as of late, winning four straight games with a pair of victories over Magoffin County and Shroder, Ohio in the Belfry Schoolboy Classic last week and wins over Mingo Central and Phelps this week.
Keathley dropped 51 on the Mingo Miners and stung Phelps for 56 on Thursday night in the Blackcats home opener.
Yes, Prestonburg played their first home game of the season on January 2nd.
Floyd Central (5-5) coach Alan Joe Moore has more uniform combinations than any coach in the 15th Region and on Saturday, the Jaguars will transform into the Allen Central Rebels as they face visiting Knott County Central on Saturday at J.E. Campbell Arena.
I love the fact that Coach Moore and Floyd Central has embraced the rich heritage of high school basketball on both Beaver Creeks. Earlier this season, Floyd Central suited up as the South Floyd Raiders and notched a 70-60 win over Magoffin County at Raider Arena, followed by a 56-49 win over Rowan County the following Saturday as the Wayland Wasps, playing their now-traditional game at Wayland Gym on December 14th.
Coach Moore believes the throwback games are important for the community to not only celebrate the past, but to come together for the future.
I whole-heartedly agree.
The Jaguars have been a little beaten up recently, with injuries to junior point guard Chris Spriggs and others who are a banged up following a road trip Gatlinburg, coming home (1-2) after giving away their final game in the Winter Classic against University High from Johnson City. The Jags had a 4-point lead with around a minute to play after a dunk by talented freshman Wesley Buck making the score 58-54, yet Floyd Central would fall 62-58 after missing free throws down the stretch.
Free throw execution is just as important as the execution of a exceptional dunk.
Floyd Central will entertain Pike County Central at home tonight and play Patriots of Knott County Central Saturday at old Allen Central. WMDJ will broadcast both games.
On the girls side, Floyd Central has quietly put together a nice start to the season at (7-2) after winning two of their three games in the Gatlinburg tournament. Injuries have also been taking a toll on the Lady Jaguars, but it’s part of the game. Coach Ty Little has the luxury of more depth this season from the bench.
Also, is there a better pair of freshmen in the 15th region than Maddy Engle and Raegan Laferty? Both have combined to score nearly half of all Floyd Central points on the season.
The Lady Jaguars will host Leslie County Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. WMDJ will broadcast the game.
Betsy Layne (6-5) coach Kory Thacker welcomed home junior Shyla Kidd at the start of the season and she’s starting to settle back in blue and white.
Kidd helped lead the Lady Cats to a 59-35 win over Shelby Valley in Thursday’s All “A” Classic opener. Betsy Layne awaits the winner of Paintsville and Belfry on Monday night.
The Betsy Layne ladies will only continue to improve their chemistry as the season rolls along with Kidd joining healthy Kinleigh Martin, standout Jaden Pente, seniors Laci Hall and Karly Williams. Sophomores Jayden Jarrell and Amari Anderson help to create a solid rotation.
Prestonsburg (4-7) has underachieved to start the season, but district championships aren’t won in December, which is what Prestonsburg proved last season. Senior Audrey Prater is enjoying a nice season while junior forward Allison Howard continues to be a rebounding machine for the Lady Blackcats.
Coach Brandon Kidd will have his girls prepared for a date with Pikeville in the All “A” quarterfinals Saturday afternoon, yet the big date circled on the calendar will be when Betsy Layne welcomes Prestonsburg next Friday night.
I urge you get out and support our local Floyd County athletes. This is shaping up to be one of the better years for both boys and girls basketball inside the 58th District in years with much left to be determined.
