JAGUARS WIN DISTRICT TITLE ON SPRIGGS' BUZZER BEATER IN OVERTIME

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Senior Chris Spriggs buried a three from the left wing as time expired in overtime to lift the Floyd Central Jaguars to the 58th District championship Thursday night, 83-80 over Lawrence County at Floyd Central High School.

 

The game was sent to overtime by Lawrence County's C.J. Waller, who connected on a three-pointer of his own milliseconds before the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation to force the extra period with the game tied at 69-69.

 

Spriggs was named 58th District Tournament Most Valuable Player, scoring 13 points and grabbing six rebounds in the finals.

 

The Jaguars were led by senior Dylan Boyd and sophomore Brayden Turner, each of whom finished the game with 17 points, and each hitting clutch shots down the strecth. Freshman Lucas Howard recorded another double-double, finishing with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

 

Floyd Central advances to the 15th Region quarterfinals next week at the Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville.

 

Lawrence County will host a second round game on Saturday, February 28th.

JAGUARS, BULLDOGS TO CAP OFF 58th DISTRICT TOURNAMENT WITH BATTLE FOR THE TITLE

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — The top two seeds will square off tonight for the boys' 58th District Tournament championship as No. 1 Floyd Central battles No. 2 Lawrence County at Floyd Central High School.

 

Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 7:30pm at Floyd Central High School.

 

Prior to the district championship game, the longtime district and county rivals Betsy Layne and Prestonsburg will meet in the 15th Region First Four, with the winner advancing to the second round on Saturday.

MARTIN POWERS LADYCATS TO 58th DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP OVER LAWRENCE COUNTY

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Betsy Layne connected on their first three three-pointers of the game, and shot better than 57 percent from the field, as they held off defending champion Lawrence County 94-85 in the girls' 58th District championship Wednesday night at Floyd Central High School.


Senior Kinleigh Martin led four Ladycats in double figures with 25 points, adding 10 rebounds en route to being named Community Trust Bank Player of the Game. Martin was also named 2026 58th District Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Joining Martin in double figures was Shyla Kidd (24 points), Jaden Pente (20), and Maddy Collins (14.)


Lawrence County was led by senior Brooke Marcum who scored a game-high 36 points. Jada Patton added 20, while Emalynn Kitts and Madison Artrip finished with 16 and 10, respectively. Artrip also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.


Betsy Layne advances to the quarterfinal round of the 15th Region Tournament and will play next week at the Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville.


Lawrence County will host a second round on Saturday, February 28th.

FLOYD CENTRAL BEATS MAGOFFIN COUNTY, ADVANCES IN 15th REGION SUPER REGIONAL

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — After a slow start, Floyd Central used a big quarter to propel itself to a 65-42 win over Magoffin County in the girls' 15th Region First Four Wednesday night at Floyd Central High School.


The win was Floyd Central's 16th consecutive win over the Lady Hornets, and the Lady Jaguars will now await the 15th Region draw results for whom and when they play in the second round on Saturday, February 28th.


Freshman Jaylin Blanton was named Community Trust Bank Player of the Game with her performance of 12 points and seven rebounds.


Sophomore Regan Laferty led Floyd Central with 16 points, and scored her 1,000th career point on the game's first basket in the first quarter.


Magoffin County was led by three players, each scoring eight points; Abby Barnett, Kelsey Slone, and Bella Trusty.

GIRLS' 58th DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS WEDNESDAY NIGHT DOUBLEHEADER

The Lawrence County Lady Bulldogs look to make it back-to-back 58th District championships, and five in six seasons, and the Betsy Layne Ladycats go after their first title in 14 years, as the two square off in the girls' 58th District Tournament finals tonight, Wednesday, February 25th.


Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 7:30pm at Floyd Central High School.
Prior to the district championship game, the Floyd Central Lady Jaguars will look to bounce back from Monday's upset loss to Lawrence County when they host the Magoffin County Lady Hornets in the First Four of the 15th Region Tournament.

BULLDOGS RACE PAST BOBCATS INTO 58th DISTRICT FINALS

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Lawrence County forced 10 third quarter turnovers and shot 12-of-18 in the quarter to pull away from Betsy Layne Tuesday night, defeating the Bobcats 81-53 in the semifinals of the 58th District Tournament at Floyd Central High School.


The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the field (31-of-62) and limited Betsy Layne to 4-of-21 from behind the three-point line.


Junior Hayden Perry was named Community Trust Bank Player of the Game. Perry poured in 18 points and tied for a team-high with eight rebounds. Lawrence County was led in scoring by senior Kaden Harris's 20 points, with junior Caden Muncy also scoring in double figures with 14.


Betsy Layne was led by senior Ethan Lance, who scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

JAGUARS BEAT BLACKCATS, RETURN TO DISTRICT FINALS FOR SECOND TIME IN THREE SEASONS

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Floyd Central used a 22-6 third quarter scoring advantage to pull away from Prestonsburg Tuesday, advancing to the 58th District Tournament finals with a 70-38 win.


The Jaguars got two double-doubles in what was their 10th win in their last 11 games. Senior Chris Spriggs scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and was named Community Trust Bank Player of the Game. Freshman Lucas  Howard  registered 14 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Brayden Turner also scored in double figures with 11.


Prestonsburg was led by senior Taegan Slone, who scored 20 points.

BOYS' 58th DISTRICT TOURNAMENT GETS UNDER WAY TONIGHT AT FLOYD CENTRAL

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — WMDJ Sports will be back live tonight from Floyd Central High School for semifinal action of the boys' 58th District Tournament.


At 6:00pm, the host Floyd Central Jaguars battler upset-minded Prestonsburg.
Then, at 7:30pm, the Betsy Layne Bobcats take on the Bulldogs of Lawrence County.

PATTON POWERS LAWRENCE COUNTY TO UPSET OF FLOYD CENTRAL

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Lawrence County sophomore Jada Patton scored 20 of her game-high 28 points in the second half, as she powered the defending champion Lady Bulldogs to a 59-52 upset of top-seeded Floyd Central Monday night in the semifinals of the 58th District Tournament.


Patton also grabbed six rebounds, and because of her performance, was named Community Trust Bank Player of the Game.


Trailing 29-21 at halftime, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Jaguars 38-23 in the second half en route to the upset win.


Senior Brooke Marcum joined Patton in double figures for Lawrence County, scoring 12.


Floyd Central was led by sophomore Reagan Laferty, who scored 16 points. Brooklyn Sammons registered a double-double off the bench for the Lady Jaguars, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.

LADYCATS SHOOT THEIR WAY BACK TO DISTRICT FINALS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2017

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — The Betsy Layne Ladycats connected on their first five three-point attempts and never looked back Monday night, beating Prestonsburg 62-40 in the semifinals of the 58th District Tournament at Floyd Central.


The win snaps a nine-game losing streak in the postseason for Betsy Layne, who advances to the district finals for the first time since 2017.


Coincidentally, the last time the Ladycats won a district tournament game, it was Prestonsburg whom they beat, 47-43.


Junior Maddy Collins was named Community Trust Bank Player of the Game. Collins finished with a game-high 16 points, with all five of her made field goals coming from behind the arc.


She was joined in double figures by Jayden Jarrell and Jaden Pente, who finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.


Prestonsburg was led in scoring by Jade Fitzpatrick, who finished as the only Lady Blackcat in double figures with 14 points.

JAGUARS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH WIN OVER SHELBY VALLEY

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Floyd Central and Shelby Valley combined for 22 made three-pointers Friday night, but when the final buzzer sounded, it was the Jaguars who claimed the 64-60 win over the Wildcats.

 

The win improved the Jaguars to 21-5 overall on the season and completed a perfect 8-0 mark at home.

 

Senior guard Chris Spriggs was named WMDJ Floyd County Player of the Game. Spriggs scored a game-high 29 points, one shy of his career-high, and connected on seven three-point attempts. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

 

Spriggs was joined in double figures by freshman Lucas Howard, who finished with 11 points, and fellow senior Dylan Boyd, who scored 10.

 

Caden Johnson led Shelby Valley with 27 points. Brady Johnson, who was named the KABC 15th Region Player of the Year on Friday, and Gavin Hamilton each scored 17.

 

Floyd Central will next play on Tuesday, February 24th in the semifinals of the 58th District tournament against Prestonsburg.

Floyd Central Hosts Shelby Valley In Regular Season Finale

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — WMDJ Sports will be broadcasting live tonight from Floyd Central High School where the Jaguars close out the regular season against the Shelby Valley Wildcats.

TURNER'S THREE LIFTS JAGUARS TO SCHOOL-RECORD 20th WIN

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Sophomore Brayden Turner did it again! Three days after scoring the game-winner to clinch the 58th District regular season championship against Lawrence County, Turner iced visiting Pikeville with a three-pointer at the buzzer to lift Floyd Central to a 69-66 win on Monday night.

 

The win is the Jaguars’ 20th of the season, setting a new school record. The program won 19 games during the 2017-18 and 2022-23 seasons.

 

Because of his last-second heroics, Turner was named WMDJ Floyd County Player of the Game. He finished with 13 points.

 

Floyd Central (20-5) was led in scoring by senior Chris Spriggs, who scored a game-high 23 points. Turner and Spriggs were joined in double figures by freshman Lucas Howard and senior Dylan Boyd, scoring 18 and 11, respectively. Howard also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

 

Pikeville (18-4) was led by Jackson Keene’s 20 points. Cole Slone (16) and Carter Parsons (11) chipped in with 11.

 

Floyd Central returns to action on Friday, February 20 when they welcome in Shelby Valley. Pikeville is also back in action on Friday, welcoming in Perry County Central.

LADY JAGS DEFEAT LAWRENCE COUNTY, COMPLETE PERFECT DISTRICT SEASON

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Floyd Central, having already secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 58th District Tournament, completed a perfect district slate in the regular season, defeating Lawrence County 66-38 Friday night.


The win marked the first time since the 2020-21 season that the Lady Jaguars (19-6) have swept the Lady Bulldogs (9-13), and the first time since the 2017-18 season that they finished district play 6-0.


Maddy Engle was named WMDJ Floyd County Player of the Game. The Floyd Central sophomore finished with a game-high 20 points and led the Lady Jaguars with 10 rebounds. It was Engle's third double-double of the season and ninth time she has scored at least 20 points.


Lawrence County was led in scoring by sophomore Jada Patton, who finished with nine points.


Floyd Central is set to host Perry County Central on Tuesday, February 17th. Lawrence County will return to Floyd County on Saturday, February 18th when it visits Betsy Layne.

JAGUARS CLINCH REGULAR SEASON DISTRICT CROWN WITH OVERTIME THRILLER OVER BULLDOGS

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Sophomore Brayden Turner converted steal into points in the final seconds of overtime to help lift Floyd Central to an 83-81 win over Lawrence County on Friday night.

 

Trailing by six entering the fourth quarter, Floyd Central (18-5) connected on 10 of 17 shots in the final 12 minutes to complete the comeback.

 

The win clinched the 58th District regular season championship for Floyd Central, its first outright title since the 2017-18 season. That season was also the last time the Jaguars finished district play with a 6-0 record.

 

Floyd Central was led by freshman Lucas Howard, who was named WMDJ Floyd County Player of the Game. Howard finished with a game-high 27 points and 13 rebounds, recording his ninth double-double of the season.

 

Howard was joined in double figures by seniors Chris Spriggs (21 points) and Dylan Boyd (15).

 

Lawrence County (13-10) placed four players in double figures, led by Kaiden Harris's 21 points, joined by Kaden Johnson (17 points), Hayden Perry (15), and C.J. Waller (13).

 

Floyd Central travels to Pike County on Saturday, February 14th for a neutral site game with Shelby Valley at the Virgie High School Gymnasium in Virgie. Also on Saturday, Lawrence County completes its district schedule with a road game at Betsy Layne.

Floyd Central To Close Out District Schedule At Home Against Lawrence County

EASTERN, Ky (WMDJ) — The Floyd Central Jaguars and Lady Jaguars will close out the district portion of their 2025-26 schedule tonight, Friday, February 13th, when they welcome in Lawrence County.


The Lady Jags have already clinched the 58th District regular season championship and No. 1 seed, and while the Jags have secured at least a share of the regular season title, they will look to clinch the outright No. 1 seed since 2018.

 

The girls' game is scheduled for a 6:00pm start, with the boys following at approximately 7:30pm. Tune in for the Howard Family Pharmacy Countdown to Tip-Off Show to get set for all the action at 5:40pm.
