CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — The Reds used a power surge and a big performance from Sal Stewart to beat the Tigers 9-2 in Game 2 of the series Saturday at Great American Ballpark.
Detroit struck first on a leadoff home run by Kevin McGonigle, but Cincinnati answered immediately in the bottom of the first.
Stewart put the Reds in front with a three-run homer, and Nathaniel Lowe followed with a solo shot to make it 4-1.
The Reds added more in the second when Elly De La Cruz hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to 6-1.
Detroit got one back on a Spencer Torkelson solo homer in the fourth, but Cincinnati pulled away for good in the sixth. Stewart delivered again with a two-run single, scoring Ke’Bryan Hayes and TJ Friedl to make it 8-2.
Friedl added a solo home run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Stewart finished with three hits and five RBIs to lead the Reds offense, while Friedl added three hits and two runs scored.
Brady Singer picked up the win after allowing two runs over 5.1 innings.
The Reds and Tigers wrap up the series Sunday afternoon. The Inside Pitch pregame show begins at 1:10 p.m., with first pitch set for 1:40 p.m. on WMDJ FM 100.1.
