CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — The Reds put together one of their wildest wins of the season Friday night, rallying past the Detroit Tigers 9-8 in a game delayed nearly two hours by rain.
Cincinnati trailed 5-0 early after home runs from Riley Greene and Javier Báez, plus a two-run double by Matt Vierling. Detroit added another run in the fourth to take full control.
The Reds began chipping away in the fifth. Matt McLain sparked the comeback with a two-run homer, his first of the season, cutting the deficit to three. Nathaniel Lowe followed with a solo shot in the sixth to make it 5-3.
McLain delivered again in the seventh, blasting his second home run of the night to tie the game at five, marking his first career multi-homer game.
Cincinnati then took the lead later in the inning on a Tigers error and an RBI double from Tyler Stephenson, going up 7-5.
Detroit answered in the eighth with a pair of home runs to reclaim an 8-7 lead, setting up late drama.
In the ninth, Lowe, who was not originally in the starting lineup and added shortly before first pitch due to an injury delivered the final blow. His two-run home run to right-center gave the Reds a 9-8 walk-off win, his first as a Red.
Cincinnati finished with 11 hits in the comeback victory.
It was another rough outing for Andrew Abbott on the mound at he gave up five runs on six hits after four innings of work. Graham Ashcraft got the win for the Reds in relief.
The Reds will face the Tigers in game two of their series tonight at Great American Ballpark. The Inisde Pitch pregame show will start at 6:45 PM and first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM. We'll have all the action for you on WMDJ FM 100.1.
