CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — A late comeback attempt wasn’t enough for the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, as they fell 9-6 to the Los Angeles Angels at Great American Ball Park.
The Angels struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second to take control. Los Angeles continued to build the lead, going up 9-0 by the eighth inning.
Cincinnati finally broke through in the eighth. Sal Stewart drove in a run with a single, and a wild pitch brought home two more to cut the deficit to 9-3.
The Reds made it interesting in the ninth inning when Elly De La Cruz blasted a three-run home run to center field, trimming the lead to 9-6, but the rally ended there.
De La Cruz led the Reds with two hits and three RBI, while Stewart added an RBI. Cincinnati finished with six hits and struck out 12 times.
Andrew Abbott took the loss after allowing seven runs in three innings of work.
Los Angeles starter José Soriano earned the win, tossing seven shutout innings while striking out 10.
The Reds have the day off tomorrow but return to Great American Ballpark on Tuesday as they host the San Francisco Giants for a three game series.
