Second Arrest Made Following U.S. 23 Crash That Injured Infant

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) — A second person has been arrested following a June 28 crash on U.S. 23 that left a four-month-old child injured.

According to an arrest citation, 31-year-old Melinda Hurd, of Inez, appeared lethargic when officers first spoke with her at Highlands ARH after the crash. Police said she still appeared to be under the influence when they made contact with her again later.

The citation states Hurd admitted she had recently used cocaine, including earlier that day. Police also learned she had an active indictment warrant.

Hurd was arrested and lodged in the Floyd County Detention Center on a charge of endangering the welfare of a minor.

The crash's driver, 30-year-old Charles Vanderpool of Prestonsburg, was previously arrested on charges of first-degree assault and DUI with aggravating circumstances after the crash, which sent the four-month-old child to another hospital for treatment of head injuries.
