PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Prestonsburg man is facing felony assault and DUI charges after a single-vehicle crash on U.S. 23 that injured his four-month-old stepchild.
According to an arrest citation from Prestonsburg City Polce, 30-year-old Charles T. Vanderpool was driving with his wife and infant stepchild when the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a guardrail. A witness told police the vehicle did not appear to brake before the crash.
All three occupants were taken to Highlands ARH. Police obtained a search warrant for Vanderpool’s blood after reporting he appeared intoxicated. Authorities later said he tested positive for fentanyl.
The infant was transferred to another hospital for treatment of head injuries.
Vanderpool was arrested and lodged in the Floyd County Detention Center on charges of first-degree assault and DUI, first offense with aggravating circumstances.
