Kentucky Completes Largest Road Comeback in Program History, Beats South Carolina in OT

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMDJ) – Kentucky completed the largest road comeback in program history Saturday, rallying from 17 points down to stun South Carolina 35-34 in overtime.

 

The No. 24 Wildcats fell behind 17-0 before gradually working their way back into the game. Kentucky trailed 20-10 at halftime, then scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter to take its first lead at 24-20.

 

South Carolina regained the advantage early in the fourth quarter, but Kentucky tied the game at 27 on a 29-yard field goal with 4:18 remaining to force overtime.

 

The Gamecocks struck first in overtime, scoring a touchdown and kicking the extra point for a 34-27 lead.

 

Kentucky answered when quarterback Kenny Minchey connected with Henry Boyer for a six-yard touchdown. Head coach Will Stein then decided against kicking the extra point and sent his offense back onto the field to win the game.

 

Minchey found Willie Rodriguez for the two-point conversion, completing the comeback and giving Kentucky a 35-34 victory.

 

Minchey finished 28-of-41 for 272 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. The Wildcats did not commit a turnover and forced two South Carolina fumbles.

 

Kentucky improves to 4-1 and picks up its second major SEC road victory in three weeks after defeating then-No. 9 Texas A&M 31-21 in College Station on September 19.

 

The Wildcats return home next Saturday to face LSU.
