Reds Recaps Are Back

CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — It’s been nearly two weeks since WMDJ last checked in on the Cincinnati Reds for no particularly dramatic reason other than your Reds writer took a self-imposed hiatus.

As it turns out, the Reds did not.

Cincinnati went 5-5 over the next 10 games, with the highlight coming Aug. 26 in San Francisco. Trailing 9-3 entering the ninth inning, the Reds scored seven runs including a Eugenio Suárez grand slam  to stun the Giants 10-9. San Francisco had been 2,208-0 in franchise history when leading by at least six runs entering the ninth.

Rookie Sal Stewart also made some history. He surpassed Jim Greengrass’ 1953 club rookie RBI record before becoming only the second Reds rookie to hit 30 home runs, joining Frank Robinson. Stewart is the first Reds rookie ever with 30 homers and 100 RBIs.

There was also a 17-5 loss to the Cubs, apparently we picked a good day to remain on hiatus, but Cincinnati bounced back to win that series before taking two of three from San Diego.

And on Thursday, Stewart was named National League Rookie of the Month for August after batting .304 with eight home runs and 21 RBIs.

Anyway, we’re back now.

Probably.
