CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — The Cincinnati Reds erased a four-run deficit but couldn't complete the comeback, falling 6-5 to the Cleveland Guardians in the opening game of Tuesday's split doubleheader at Great American Ball Park.

The game was made up after Monday night's contest was postponed because of severe weather.

Cleveland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning when Kyle Manzardo hit a two-out grand slam off Chase Burns.

The Reds answered with Sal Stewart's 22nd home run of the season in the third before taking the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Tyler Stephenson drove in a run with a double, Edwin Arroyo followed with an RBI single, and Stewart capped the rally with a two-run single to put Cincinnati ahead 5-4.

The Guardians tied the game in the fifth on Chase DeLauter's sacrifice fly before taking the lead for good in the eighth. With runners on first and third, Brayan Rocchio laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed DeLauter to score what proved to be the winning run.

Stewart led Cincinnati offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two walks. Elly De La Cruz, Nathaniel Lowe, Tyler Stephenson and Eric Myers each collected two hits.

Burns settled down after the first inning, allowing five runs, only one earned, over five innings while striking out four. Sam Moll was charged with the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in the eighth.

The Reds and Guardians return to the field for the second game of the doubleheader at 7:10 p.m., with coverage on WMDJ FM 100.1.
