ST. LOUIS, Mo. (WMDJ) — Eugenio Suárez broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run home run as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 Friday night at Busch Stadium.
Tyler Stephenson gave the Reds a 1-0 lead with an RBI ground-rule double in the fourth, but Blaze Jordan put the Cardinals in front with a two-run double in the fifth.
Cincinnati answered in the seventh when Sal Stewart singled ahead of Suárez's 14th home run of the season, giving the Reds a 3-2 advantage. Stewart added an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth.
The Reds finished with 11 hits, led by two-hit performances from Stewart, Suárez, Stephenson and Nathaniel Lowe. Elly De La Cruz scored twice and stole two bases.
Rhett Lowder allowed two runs on one hit over five innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. Carson Ferguson, Julian Garcia, Brock Burke, Tejay Antone and Emilio Pagán combined to hold St. Louis scoreless over the final four innings, with Pagán earning his 10th save.
The Cardinals managed just two hits in the game.
The Reds and Cardinals continue their three-game series Saturday. Hunter Greene will get the start on the mound for Cincinnati. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. on WMDJ FM 100.1.
