DENVER, Co. (WMDJ) — Welcome back from the All-Star break!
The Cincinnati Reds opened the second half of the season with a 7-2 win over the Colorado Rockies Friday night at Coors Field.
Spencer Steer stole the show, hitting two home runs including an exciting inside-the-park homer in the eighth inning. He finished with three RBIs. Eugenio Suárez also went deep, while Elly De La Cruz capped the scoring with his 16th home run of the season and finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
Sal Stewart continued his impressive rookie campaign with a two-run night, driving in a pair with an RBI double in the first and a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
On the mound, Brady Singer picked up the win after allowing two runs over seven innings while striking out six.
The Reds will look to keep the momentum going Saturday afternoon in game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:10 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 2:40 p.m. on WMDJ FM 100.1.
Also during the All-Star break, the Reds locked up one of their brightest young stars. Cincinnati and right-hander Chase Burns agreed to a seven-year, $105 million contract extension. The 23-year-old has been outstanding in his first full major league season, going 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 102? innings while earning his first All-Star selection.
