Reds shut out by Phillies, 1-0, in series finale

CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — The Cincinnati Reds were unable to secure a series victory Thursday night, falling 1-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies at Great American Ball Park.

The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning when Justin Crawford delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Derek Hill with the only run of the game.

Despite taking the loss, Brady Singer turned in a strong performance for Cincinnati. Singer allowed one run on four hits over 7 and 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking one.

Philadelphia starter Jesús Luzardo dominated the Reds lineup, tossing seven scoreless innings while allowing two hits and striking out 11. Jhoan Duran earned his 23rd save after recording the final three outs.

The Reds managed just three hits and struck out 14 times. The strikeouts continued a difficult trend throughout the series, as Cincinnati struck out 18 times in Game 1, 10 times in Wednesday's victory and 14 more in Thursday's loss, totaling 42 strikeouts over the three games.

Cincinnati threatened in the ninth inning when JJ Bleday singled and stole second before Spencer Steer was hit by a pitch. However, Eugenio Suárez and Tyler Stephenson both struck out before Noelvi Marte grounded out to end the game.

The Reds (42-50) begin a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday at Great American Ball Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6:40 p.m. on WMDJ FM 100.1.
