PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WMDJ) — The Reds snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night, defeating the Pirates 6-4 in Pittsburgh while handing star pitcher Paul Skenes the loss.
Pittsburgh struck first on Konnor Griffin's leadoff home run, but Cincinnati answered with four runs in the second inning. Spencer Steer and Tyler Stephenson each drove in a run with RBI singles before Blake Dunn and Elly De La Cruz added sacrifice flies to give the Reds a 4-1 lead.
The Pirates battled back with a sacrifice fly in the fifth before back-to-back solo home runs from Marcell Ozuna and Esmerlyn Valdez tied the game in the sixth.
The Reds regained the lead for good in the eighth when Noelvi Marte launched a two-run homer to left-center, scoring Sal Stewart and putting Cincinnati back in front 6-4.
Andrew Abbott allowed four runs over in just over five innings, while Brock Burke earned the win in relief. Caleb Ferguson picked up his first save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Reds will look to win the series Saturday afternoon from Pittsburgh's PNC Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 3:35 p.m. on WMDJ FM 100.1.
