LEXINGTON, Ky. (WMDJ) — The University of Kentucky is mourning the loss of student-athlete Nic "Happy" Smith.

In a statement released Monday, the university confirmed Smith's death and described it as a tragic loss for the campus community.

Smith was a sophomore in the Community Leadership and Development program within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. He was also a member of the UK football team as a redshirt freshman.

University officials extended condolences to Smith's family, friends and teammates and asked the public to respect their privacy during this difficult time.

The university also reminded students and employees that support resources are available through the Office for Student Success for those affected by the loss.

UK Football Head Coach Will Stein said the team's "hearts are broken" following Smith's death.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic's family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him," Stein said in the statement. "This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory."

The university did not release additional details regarding Smith's death.
