QUEENS, N.Y. (WMDJ) — The Cincinnati Reds came up short in their bid for a sweep Wednesday night, falling to the New York Mets, 4-2.
Juan Soto gave New York an early lead with a solo home run in the first inning, and Eric Wagaman followed with his first homer of the season in the second to make it 2-0.
The Reds got on the board in the third when Nathaniel Lowe singled home Elly De La Cruz. Cincinnati cut the deficit to one again in the sixth, when Sal Stewart drove in Tyler Stephenson with an infield single.
But the Mets added insurance in the seventh, as Carson Benge singled home Jared Young to make it 4-2. Benge finished with two hits and two RBIs for New York.
Andrew Abbott took the loss for Cincinnati, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits over six innings. Blake Dunn led the Reds at the plate with three hits.
The loss drops Cincinnati back to fourth place in the NL Central. The Reds still took the series, two games to one.
Cincinnati is off Thursday before returning home to Great American Ball Park for a three-game weekend series against the Atlanta Braves. The opener is Friday night at 6:40 on WMDJ FM 100.1.
