CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — The Cincinnati Reds were overpowered by Washington’s long ball Tuesday night, falling 10-4 to the Nationals at Great American Ball Park.
Washington launched six home runs in the win, with James Wood getting things started in the third inning with a solo shot. Luis García Jr. followed with a homer later in the inning, then added another in the fifth. Daylen Lile also homered twice, including a three-run blast in the fifth that helped the Nationals break the game open.
The Reds got on the board in the fourth. Matt McLain drove in a run on a force out, and another scored when Tyler Stephenson reached on a Washington fielding error to cut the deficit to 3-2.
But the Nationals answered quickly, scoring four times in the fifth to pull away. Brady House added a two-run homer in the eighth, and José Tena drove in another run with a double in the ninth.
Cincinnati made some noise in the bottom of the ninth, when JJ Bleday singled home Spencer Steer and Sal Stewart, but the late rally wasn’t enough.
The Reds collected 10 hits in the loss, with Stewart going 3-for-5 and Elly De La Cruz and Bleday each adding two hits. Starter Brady Singer took the loss after allowing three runs over 3 2/3 innings.
The Reds and Nationals continue the series Wednesday night at Great American Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. and the Inside Pitch pregame show starts at 6:10 p.m. on your home for Reds baseball, WMDJ FM 100.1.
