Reds Shut Out By Astros, Drop Eighth Straight

CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — The Reds rough start to May continued Friday, as they returned home to Great American Ball Park and were shut out by the Houston Astros, 10-0.

Houston jumped ahead in the second inning, when Zach Dezenzo hit a two-run homer to right field. Yordan Alvarez added to the lead in the sixth with a two-run shot of his own, making it 4-0.

The Astros added another run in the eighth before breaking the game open in the ninth. Zach Cole hit a three-run homer, Christian Vázquez followed with a solo shot, and Shay Whitcomb added an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Cincinnati finished with five hits but could not push a run across. Nick Lodolo took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. Houston starter Spencer Burrows earned the win after throwing seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. The bullpen woes for the Reds continued, especially for Tony Santillan who gave up four runs off of four hits.

The Reds have played every day so far in May and have lost each game.

Cincinnati will face Houston again Saturday at 4:10 p.m. The Inside Pitch pregame show begins at 3:40 p.m. on WMDJ.
