CINCINNATI, Oh. (WMDJ) — The Reds couldn’t complete the sweep Sunday, falling to the Tigers 8-3 at Great American Ballpark.
Detroit struck early with a two-run double from Kerry Carpenter in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Cincinnati answered back, getting solo home runs from Nathaniel Lowe in the second and JJ Bleday, who was just called up from Triple-A, in the fourth. The Reds briefly took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Matt McLain drove in a run with a double.
The game turned in the seventh.
Hao-Yu Lee hit his first career home run to put Detroit back in front, and Spencer Torkelson followed with a solo shot, his fifth straight game with a home run. The Tigers added another run on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead.
Detroit put the game away in the eighth with a two-run homer from Gleyber Torres.
The Reds finished with seven hits, while Detroit tallied 12.
Cincinnati still takes the series and will have Monday off before hosting the Colorado Rockies for a three-game set. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 6:40 p.m., with pregame coverage at 6:10 on WMDJ FM 100.1.
