MINNEAPOLIS, Mn. (WMDJ) — The Cincinnati Reds scored three runs in the ninth inning, then added two more in the 10th to beat the Minnesota Twins 7-4 on Sunday.
Minnesota built a 3-0 lead early on RBI hits from Victor Caratini and Josh Bell, but the Reds got on the board in the fourth when Sal Stewart drove in Elly De La Cruz on a groundout.
Cincinnati’s biggest swing came in the ninth. With the Reds down to their final outs, TJ Friedl lined a three-run double to center field to put Cincinnati on top 4-3.
The Twins answered in the bottom half of the inning when Austin Martin doubled home the tying run to send the game to extras.
In the 10th, Eugenio Suárez reached on a fielding error that allowed De La Cruz to score, and Rece Hinds followed with a two-run double to give the Reds the cushion they needed.
The game ended in unusual fashion when Reds catcher P.J. Higgins used the automated ball-strike challenge system to overturn a called ball into strike three for the final out.
Friedl finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Hinds drove in two. Reds closer Emilio Pagán actually picked up the win in relief and Graham Ashcraft earned the save.
The Reds now head to Florida to face the Tampa Bay Rays. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. Monday, with Inside Pitch at 6:10 on WMDJ FM 100.1.
