HS Basketball Roundup: Jaguars bounce back in Tennessee, Blackcats pick up first win, Betsy Layne falls to Henry Clay

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WMDJ) – The Floyd Central Jaguars bounced back in day two of the Smoky Mountain Winter Classic in Gatlinburg with wins for both boys and girls varsity teams. 

 

The Lady Jaguars edged 12th region opponent Casey County 47-46 on Friday night to improve to (6-2) on the season. The Lady Jaguars will face McMinn County, Tenn on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

 

On the boys’ side, the Jaguars (5-4) snapped a 3-game losing streak with a 71-55 win over the Bulldogs of Geraldine High School from Alabama. It was Geraldine’s (7-7) second loss of the tournament. 

 

Other scores from around the county:

• The Prestonsburg Blackcats locked up their first win of the season with a 74-73 win over Magoffin County in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry on Friday. Prestonsburg (1-5) will face Shroder, OH on Saturday.

 

Betsy Layne saw their 4-game winning streak snap at the hands of Henry Clay on Friday as the Blue Devils beat the Bobcats 73-56 in the Central Bank Classic at Lexington Christian Academy.

 

Betsy Layne Lady Cats were matched up with 15th region rival Pikeville in the Ryan Keaton Express Realty Ohio River Classic at Raceland High School. Pikeville (2-5) came out on top 57-50. Pikeville came into the tournament winless before winning back-to-back games against Betsy Layne and Wheelersburg, OH. Betsy Layne fell to (4-5) after defeating Lewis County on Thursday 63-44.
