EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) - Two games, two opening night wins Monday evening for Floyd Central girls and boys basketball teams as the Lady Jaguars opened the season with a 70-47 win over visiting Paintsville. In the nightcap, the boys knocked off Belfry 64-52.
Three Lady Jags scored in double figures led by the dynamic freshman duo of Maddy Engle and Raegan Laferty with 17 points each. Chloe Crase chipped in 11 points to go along with three assists.
The Lady Jags enjoyed a 29-10 fast-break point advantage, pushing the tempo while scoring 61 points in the paint on their way to the win. Floyd Central also owned a staggering 22+ rebound advantage over Paintsville.
Senior Hannah Lafferty was named WMDJ / Community Trust Bank Player of the Game as she made her return to the hardwood after missing her entire junior season with an ACL injury. Laferty scored four points and grabbed four rebounds in her return.
In the nightcap, the Floyd Central boys enjoyed a breakout night from sophomore forward Christian Johnson as the Jaguars downed Belfry 64-52. Johnson scored a career-high 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the win. He was named WMDJ / Community Trust Bank Player of the Game.
The new-look Jags also received big performances from freshman Wesley Buck and eighth grader Lucas Howard.
Buck enjoyed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Howard scored nine points and nabbed 11 rebounds.
Floyd Central overcame a poor shooting night after connecting on only one shot from behind the arch and 37 percent shooting from the field in the victory.
The Jaguars were also missing starting point guard Chris Spriggs who was out due to injury.
Both teams are back in action this Friday hosting Prestonsburg on WMDJ.
