BETSY LAYNE, Ky. (WMDJ) – Floyd County will soon have another facility honored as part of the Glory Road project as D.W. Howard Memorial Fieldhouse will receive official recognition this Saturday afternoon.
“The Dome” will join Prestonsburg Fieldhouse, Wayland Gymnasium and Wheelwright Gymnasium as part of the project, a mission being conducted by the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in Louisville to help preserve and recognize the history of high school basketball.
Betsy Layne’s girls will face Prestonsburg at 1 p.m. followed by boys’ action at 3 p.m.
During halftime of the girls’ game, there will be recognition of past girls teams including the 15th Region championship teams from 1994, 2003 and 2005. Also, the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship team of 2010 will be recognized.
At the conclusion of the first game, recognition of the boys’ 15th Region championship teams from 1976 and 1980 will be honored along with the 2011 State All “A” Tournament champions.
WMDJ will have legendary Bobcat coaches Cassandra Akers and William “Junior” Newsome on the broadcast to relive the past and talk about the ceremonies, while calling the action.
