Son Faces 20 Criminal Counts After Mother's Body Found in Paintsville Home

Category: Local News

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WMDJ) — A man faces 20 criminal counts following an investigation into the discovery of his mother's body inside a Paintsville home.

According to the Paintsville Police Department, officers responded to a welfare check on Andrea Circle October 19. A family member reported that John Carroll had said his mother died approximately one week earlier and her body remained inside the residence.

Police located the deceased woman inside the home. Investigators have since determined she had been dead for approximately four months.

Over the following week, investigators obtained search warrants, subpoenas, financial and medical records, and conducted interviews.

Carroll was taken into custody Monday in Pikeville and transported to Paintsville for questioning before being lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.

He is charged with abuse of a corpse, failure to report a death, theft by unlawful taking involving $10,000 to less than $1 million, and 17 counts of second-degree possession of a forged instrument.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing, with additional charges possible. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
