Social Security Increase Coming in January Has Local Impact

Category: National News

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WMDJ) —  Social Security recipients across Eastern Kentucky will see a 3.6% cost-of-living increase beginning in January 2027, the Social Security Administration announced Wednesday.

The increase has implications for thousands of local residents. According to the agency’s latest county-level figures, 10,815 Floyd County residents received Social Security benefits in December 2025. The totals included 16,695 in Pike County, 6,490 in Johnson County, 3,920 in Knott County and 3,490 in Magoffin County.

Statewide, more than 1 million Kentuckians received retirement, survivor or disability benefits.

The annual adjustment is tied to inflation. Social Security officials say retirement benefits will increase by an average of about $75 per month nationwide, though individual increases will vary.

Higher Supplemental Security Income payments will begin December 31, 2026.
