FRANKFORT, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Floyd County water treatment plant dating back to the 1930s is set to receive $1.7 million for replacement as part of a record round of federal investment in Eastern Kentucky.
The funding will help replace the water treatment plant in Wheelwright, which serves more than 300 homes.
The project is among 67 across Eastern Kentucky receiving a combined $78.8 million from the Appalachian Regional Commission during fiscal year 2026, the largest annual ARC investment Kentucky has received.
State officials say the 67 projects, combined with nearly $93.8 million in matching funds from local governments and organizations, represent more than $172.5 million in total investment across Appalachian Kentucky.
Other funded projects include broadband expansion, water and sewer infrastructure and a healthcare training center in Whitesburg.
