Thompson will be sworn in for the new term in January. The chief judge provides administrative oversight for the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

Thompson has served on the Court of Appeals since 2019 and represents Division 2 of the 7th Appellate District, which includes 33 counties in Eastern Kentucky.

Before joining the appeals court, Thompson spent nearly two decades as a Pike County Circuit Court judge, serving in the Family Court division from 1999 through 2018. His judicial career began in 1995 on the Pike County District Court bench.
