FRANKFORT, Ky. (WMDJ) – Kentucky’s fall forest fire hazard season begins October 1 and continues through December 15, bringing seasonal restrictions on outdoor burning.

During that period, state law generally prohibits burning flammable materials in or within 150 feet of woodland or brushland between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The law includes an exception when the ground is covered with snow.

The Kentucky Division of Forestry reminds residents to check for local burn bans and other restrictions before burning, even during evening hours.

Residents should clear vegetation for 10 feet around burn piles, keep fires small and have water and a shovel nearby. Never leave a fire unattended, and stay until it is completely extinguished.

Anyone whose burn pile starts a wildfire may be responsible for the cost of putting it out.
