PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WMDJ) — A West Van Lear man is facing several charges after a domestic disturbance in Staffordsville led police to suspected explosive devices and booby traps.

Police responded Thursday night near the Cross Creek subdivision after reports of a woman screaming for help. Investigators say Robert Thomas Smith was allegedly assaulting his wife with a computer cord before showing first responders what appeared to be a homemade explosive.

Smith then fled into a hillside, where officers encountered fishing line and hooks reportedly strung at eye level. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

Authorities later found additional suspected explosive devices containing chemicals and wiring. The FBI and a bomb squad were called to the scene.

Smith’s wife was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Smith is currently lodged in Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. Records list charges including possession of a destructive device or booby trap device, third-degree use of a weapon of mass destruction, first-degree wanton endangerment, assault, fleeing or evading police, terroristic threatening and resisting arrest.

Smith was also being served with a parole violation warrant. Federal charges are also possible.
