PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WMDJ) — A West Van Lear man is facing multiple felony charges after a domestic violence investigation led police to homemade explosive devices and booby traps.

Paintsville Police say officers responded Thursday evening to a home along KY 40 West near the Cross Creek subdivision, where two female victims were found needing medical attention.

Police say Robert Thomas Smith fled into a nearby hillside. Officers searching the area encountered fishing line with treble hooks hanging around eye level.

Smith was later located nearby and allegedly struck a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy before being taken into custody.

Police also found multiple homemade explosive devices at the residence. The FBI, Kentucky State Police and other agencies assisted at the scene.

Big Sandy Regional Detention Center records list charges including possession of a destructive device or booby trap device, third-degree use of a weapon of mass destruction, wanton endangerment, assault, fleeing or evading police and resisting arrest.

Smith was also served with a parole violation warrant.
