PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WMDJ) — Dolly Parton's death may have brought an end to one of country music's most remarkable careers, but there is still at least one song from the legend waiting to be heard.
In 2015, Parton wrote and recorded an unreleased song called “My Place in History” as Dollywood's DreamMore Resort was preparing to open.
The song was placed on a CD and sealed inside a chestnut “Dream Box” at the resort. A CD player was also placed inside the box so the recording can still be played even if the technology is outdated by the time it is opened.
Parton's instructions call for the box to remain closed until Jan. 19, 2046, which would have been her 100th birthday.
The song was written with the intention of eventually being released as Parton's last.
Parton later admitted keeping the song locked away bothered her because she believed it was particularly good and sometimes wished she could retrieve it.
For now, its lyrics and melody remain a secret.
And while Parton reportedly left behind many other unreleased recordings, “My Place in History” is meant to serve as a special message from Dolly to the future, waiting until 2046 to finally be heard.
