FRANKFORT, Ky. (WMDJ) — Kentucky is set to receive $358 million as part of a proposed $17.1 billion multistate settlement with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

Attorney General Russell Coleman announced the agreement Wednesday, saying it resolves claims that Meta designed its platforms with addictive features, exposed young users to mental health risks and misled the public about their safety.

The settlement would also require new protections for children and teens, including a combined two-hour daily limit on Facebook and Instagram, mandatory breaks during extended use, overnight restrictions from midnight to 6 a.m. and limits on notifications during school hours.

Meta would also be required to strengthen age verification, parental controls and safeguards against harmful content.

Most of the changes would remain in effect for 10 years and be reviewed by an independent auditor.

Kentucky will separately receive nearly $7.5 million to settle an investigation involving Cambridge Analytica.

The $17.1 billion settlement remains subject to court approval.
