FRANKFORT, Ky. (WMDJ) — Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman and a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general have begun presenting their case against Meta, alleging the company knowingly designed Facebook and Instagram features that harmed children and teens.
Kentucky is joining California, Colorado and New Jersey in presenting the case during a trial expected to last six to eight weeks in federal court in California.
The states allege Meta designed features to encourage compulsive use among young users while misleading parents and the public about potential risks. They also accuse the company of illegally collecting personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.
Meta previously sought to have key portions of the case dismissed and later attempted to delay the trial, but those efforts were rejected.
The states are seeking monetary penalties and changes to how Meta’s platforms protect younger users.
