PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WMDJ) — The new U.S. 460 corridor in Pike County has received regional recognition for its impact on communities and economic development in Eastern Kentucky.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet received a Mid-America Association of State Transportation Officials Regional Award Wednesday in Cincinnati. The nearly $800 million project was honored in the Quality of Life/Community Development category and will now be considered for a spot among 12 national finalists.

The nearly 17-mile, four-lane corridor opened Oct. 31, 2025, connecting Pikeville with the Virginia state line. The new highway shortened the route by about 10 miles while replacing narrow, winding roads through the mountainous region.

The project also includes Kentucky’s tallest twin-span bridges and was designed to improve safety, travel times and access for residents, businesses and emergency services.

Planning for the corridor began in 1990, with its first eight miles opening in 2014.
