KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WMDJ) — The Kentucky River District Health Department has confirmed that a bat found in Knott County tested positive for rabies.

Health officials say two people were exposed and are now receiving treatment. The bat was reported July 29, collected by the health department and sent for testing.

Residents are urged to avoid handling bats or other wild animals, including those that appear sick, injured or dead. Anyone who may have had contact with a bat should promptly contact a healthcare provider, veterinarian and the local health department.

Officials also advise residents not to release a bat found inside a home before seeking guidance, especially if it was near a sleeping person or young child. Pet owners should make sure rabies vaccinations are current.
