FRANKFORT, Ky. (WMDJ) — Nine cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported across Floyd, Letcher and Morgan counties as Kentucky health officials investigate a significant statewide increase in the intestinal illness.

According to figures from the Kentucky Department for Public Health, Letcher County has reported six cases, while Floyd County has reported two and Morgan County has reported one.

Statewide, 620 possible cases were under investigation as of July 29, with 274 confirmed. The number of people hospitalized has increased from seven to 24.

Kentucky typically averages approximately 35 cases of cyclosporiasis each year, with infections generally increasing during the summer months.

The largest numbers have been reported in Jefferson County with 41 cases, Fayette County with 29, Madison County with 16, Hardin County with 13 and Kenton County with 11.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic Cyclospora parasite. People can become infected after consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms can include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping, bloating, fever, vomiting and headaches.
