West Van Lear Man Charged with Murder Following Johnson County Shooting

THEALKA, Ky. (WMDJ) — A West Van Lear man has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting Saturday in Johnson County.

According to Kentucky State Police, troopers from Post 9 in Pikeville were notified by Paintsville 911 Dispatch of a shooting at a residence on Main Camp Branch in the Thealka community.

When troopers arrived, they found Richard Roberts, of River, unresponsive in the driveway of the residence with an apparent gunshot wound. Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene by the Johnson County Coroner’s Office.

The preliminary investigation indicates Blake Webb, 27, of West Van Lear, allegedly shot Roberts following a brief physical altercation. Police say Webb fled the scene but was taken into custody nearby a short time later.

Webb was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center and is charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

The investigation is continuing by Kentucky State Police, with assistance from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Paintsville Police Department.
