HAZARD, Ky. (WMDJ) — Gov. Andy Beshear announced Monday that $2.5 million will be directed toward building approximately 25 additional homes in Eastern Kentucky's high-ground communities as the region marked four years since the devastating floods of 2022.
During events in Perry and Knott counties, Beshear handed over the keys to four new homeowners at the Skyview neighborhood in Hazard, broke ground on 30 new homes at the Chestnut Ridge development in Knott County and signed an executive order providing the additional funding for affordable housing.
According to the governor's office, the $2.5 million will help build about 25 homes across Eastern Kentucky's high-ground communities. The funding comes from money made available through a line-item veto earlier this year.
State officials say nearly 500 homes are planned across eight high-ground communities in Eastern Kentucky. Two developments have already been completed, including the Wayland high-ground community in Floyd County, where 14 homes have been built, and The Cottages at Thompson Branch in Letcher County.
The executive order took effect immediately.
