HYDEN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Three people were killed in two separate crashes Saturday on the Hal Rogers Parkway in Leslie County, including a second fatal collision that occurred while the roadway was closed for the first crash.
According to Kentucky State Police, troopers came upon a two-vehicle crash near the 37-mile marker at about 2:54 p.m.
The preliminary investigation indicates a Nissan Juke driven by Taegan Mosley, 17, of Hyden, was traveling westbound when it crossed the center line and struck an eastbound Ford Expedition head-on.
Mosley was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Expedition and a juvenile passenger were flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center with injuries. A passenger, Penny Ison, 64, of Cornettsville, was taken by ambulance to Mary Breckinridge Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
While emergency crews and investigators were working the initial crash and the parkway remained closed, a second fatal collision occurred at about 7:43 p.m.
State police said a Chevrolet Traverse driven by Tracie Whittymore, 42, of London, drove through the roadway closure and struck the rear of a parked commercial vehicle. Whittymore was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kentucky State Police said toxicology testing is pending in both crashes. The investigations remain ongoing.
