Floyd County Schools awarded USDA nutrition grant

EASTERN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Floyd County Schools has been awarded funding through the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the 2026-27 school year, providing participating elementary schools with fresh produce for students.

According to the district, the grant was approved through the Kentucky Department of Education's Division of School and Community Nutrition and will fund the program from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program provides students with nutritious snacks during the school day while introducing them to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try.

Established through the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, the program is designed to encourage healthy eating habits among elementary school students.

Superintendent Tonya Horne-Williams said the district appreciates the continued support of the Kentucky Department of Education and the USDA in promoting student health, wellness and academic success.
