MARTIN, Ky. (WMDJ) — Former Martin Mayor Alan Reed Whicker, who served on the Martin City Council before being appointed mayor in 1995, has died. He was 77.
According to his obituary, Whicker passed away Friday, July 17, at his home in Martin.
Whicker was unanimously appointed mayor by the Martin City Council in June 1995 following the resignation of then-Mayor Raymond Griffith, who stepped down for health reasons. Before becoming mayor, Whicker served on the city council. He remained mayor until March 2000.
Outside of public service, Whicker spent many years as a staff representative with the United Steelworkers and also worked with ARH Hospitals. His obituary describes him as a devoted family man who enjoyed fishing, cheering on the University of Kentucky Wildcats and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Molly Whicker; children Christopher Reed Whicker, Tyler Ramey and Tiffany Calhoun; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 20, at 2 p.m. at Hindman Funeral Services Chapel, with Brent Tackett officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Memory Gardens in Hindman. Visitation will be held Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m., with an additional service at 7 p.m.
