Floyd County man sentenced to 10 years in Prestonsburg stabbing case

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Floyd County man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault in connection with a stabbing at a Prestonsburg apartment complex last year.

According to a judgment entered July 16 in Floyd Circuit Court, 32-year-old Tyler Dakota Newsome pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree assault, a Class B felony. The charge stemmed from an incident on or about Oct. 3, 2025. As part of the plea agreement, a charge of tampering with physical evidence and another count were dismissed.

Prestonsburg police said the incident occurred shortly after midnight at the Stonecrest townhouse complex. Officers found a man suffering from a stab wound to the abdomen near a guardrail. Investigators alleged the victim had argued with Newsome after asking him to move out. According to police, Newsome later entered the victim’s room and stabbed him while he was in bed.

Police said Newsome admitted to stabbing the victim but claimed the knife had been left on a kitchen table. Officers were unable to locate the weapon.

Judge Johnny Ray Harris sentenced Newsome to 10 years in prison. Because first-degree assault is a violent offense under Kentucky law, Newsome must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
