SASSAFRAS, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Knott County woman was killed early Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash on KY 15 in the Sassafras community.

According to Kentucky State Police, troopers were called to the scene shortly before 4 a.m. on July 17.

The preliminary investigation indicates that 39-year-old Melisa Slone, of Garner, was driving a northbound white Chevrolet Silverado when the truck struck a rock in the roadway. Police said the impact caused the vehicle to lose control and overturn, ejecting Slone from the truck.

Slone was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County Coroner's Office.

Investigators said the preliminary investigation indicates Slone was not wearing a seat belt. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor, and toxicology results are pending.

The crash remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.
