Funeral Arrangements Announced for Former Floyd County Sheriff John K. Blackburn

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) — Funeral arrangements have been announced for former Floyd County Sheriff John K. Blackburn, who passed away at the age of 75.

 

The Floyd County Sheriff's Office announced Blackburn's passing Saturday evening. Blackburn was first elected sheriff in 1997 and served Floyd County from 1998 through 2014.

 

According to his obituary, Blackburn was born Feb. 24, 1951, in Buffalo, Kentucky. During his career, he served as a deputy sheriff before being elected Floyd County sheriff, where he served for 16 years. He also worked as a truck driver, coal miner and owner of State Security, Inc.

 

Blackburn was named Kentucky's Sheriff of the Year and was elected president of the Kentucky Sheriffs' Association in 2013. He was also a member of East Point Masonic Lodge No. 657, the Shriners, the Fraternal Order of Police, Fish and Wildlife, and Glory Ridge Trinity Church.

 

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. by East Point Masonic Lodge No. 657.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mayo Cemetery in Prestonsburg.
