PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Prestonsburg woman was arrested Sunday night after police say she drove the wrong way on U.S. 23, nearly causing multiple head-on collisions.
According to an arrest citation, Prestonsburg Police responded to the area of U.S. 23 near Allen after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes. Dispatch advised that several callers reported the vehicle nearly struck other motorists head-on.
Police identified the driver as Anita Davis, 45, of Prestonsburg. Officers located her and another motorist stopped along Ky. 1428.
The citation states an officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Davis allegedly admitted she had smoked a marijuana cigarette before driving and told officers she became confused near the Alpike Motel, leading her to enter the highway in the wrong direction.
According to the citation, Davis also told officers there was additional marijuana inside the vehicle. Police reported locating marijuana and drug paraphernalia beneath the passenger seat.
Officers noted Davis was unsteady on her feet and was carrying an oxygen tank. Because of her condition, a standard field sobriety test was not performed. The citation states an eye test indicated signs of impairment.
A witness told police Davis nearly struck his vehicle head-on while he was traveling on U.S. 23. The witness told officers his wife and juvenile child were also in the vehicle at the time.
Police transported Davis to Highlands ARH Regional Medical Center, where she submitted to a blood test before being lodged in the Floyd County Detention Center.
Davis was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, operating a motor vehicle under the influence with aggravating circumstances, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
