FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WMDJ) — Traffic on KY 979 has been shifted onto a temporary one-lane diversion as work continues on a bridge replacement project.

The traffic change took effect Friday, allowing crews to move vehicles off the existing bridge so construction can begin on a new replacement structure.

The temporary route is expected to remain in place until the project is completed later this year.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the diversion is narrow and wide loads are not permitted. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes when necessary, reduce their speed and follow all posted signs and traffic signals.

Motorists should also expect changing traffic conditions and allow extra travel time while construction continues.
