PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (WMDJ) — Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened early Sunday morning in Johnson County.
According to news release from KSP, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. on April 26 along Main Street in Paintsville. The agency’s Critical Incident Response Team was requested by Post 9 in Pikeville to handle the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate an officer with the Paintsville Police Department was on foot patrol when he spotted a motorcycle matching the description of one reported stolen. A short time later, the officer encountered 37-year-old Shawn Gayheart of Salyersville.
Police say Gayheart fled on foot before being caught, leading to a physical altercation. A second officer arrived to assist, and both officers deployed tasers, which were unsuccessful. The officers then fired their weapons, striking Gayheart.
