FRANKFORT, Ky. (WMDJ) — More than $52 million in state funding has been approved to improve water infrastructure across rural Kentucky, with a significant portion directed to Martin County, the City of Martin and the Southern Water and Sewer District in McDowell in Floyd County.
On Monday, Andy Beshear signed House Joint Resolution 81, releasing funding through the state’s Kentucky WWATERS Program. The measure includes nearly $26 million going directly toward projects in Martin County.
For the Martin County Water District, the funding supports multiple upgrades, including water line replacements, pump station improvements, tank repairs and debt service, totaling more than $11 million.
The City of Martin is set to receive just over $500,000 for infrastructure rehabilitation work aimed at improving system reliability.
Meanwhile, the Southern Water and Sewer District in McDowell will receive more than $8 million combined for water line upgrades, tank replacement and debt-related costs.
Officials say the funding is designed to modernize aging systems, improve service reliability and reduce financial strain on local water systems.
The resolution declares an emergency, allowing the funding to be released immediately.
