Floyd County woman charged after fire destroys home, spreads to hillside

DAVID, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Floyd County woman is facing felony charges after a fire destroyed a home and spread to nearby areas last week.

Deputies with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office were called around 3:30 p.m. Thursday to a house fire on Buckeye Branch of Blue River Road at David on a report of suspected arson.

According to a police report, deputies spoke with 38-year-old Kayla Combs, who said she had been trying to burn grass away from her mother’s home when the fire spread and ignited the structure.

The fire then moved up a hillside and threatened other homes in the Triple S Hollow area.

Fire departments from David, Prestonsburg and Middle Creek responded, but crews said the fire spread beyond their control and assistance was requested from the Kentucky Division of Forestry.

Officials say the fire caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Authorities note Kentucky is currently in spring fire season, when outdoor burning is restricted during daytime hours due to increased fire risk.

Combs was arrested and charged with third-degree arson and first-degree criminal mischief.
